The Exotica Erotica Ball used to be the place to be in Boulder on Halloween weekend. What started as a private party in an art collector’s home over a decade and a half ago evolved into the biggest, most exclusive one in town, selling out the one thousand person capacity Boulder Theater for several of its last few years. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the long time benefactor of Exotica’s fundraising, hosted the farewell event last year though. This year, ex-Exotica producers Pamela Alford (Peak Productions) and Jenifer Kuntz (Illusion Lab) attempted to fill the void left in its absence with Voix de la Ville: An Evening of Subculture Bliss. Performers included Sunshine Jones featuring Michael Sultan (both formerly of Dubtribe Soundsystem), Kraddy (Glitch Mob), Sub Swara live (NYC), Ukulele Loki’s Gadabout Orchestra, Jantsen, VJ Videolicious, Guillaume on sitar, Royale (DopeRecordings.com), Les Ferers Courvosier and LA-based Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque, among others. Nearly seven hundred costume-clad Boulderites showed up for the party. Four of them had Christmas presents strapped to their pelvises, inspired by Justin Timberlake’s infamous SNL music video parody “Dick in a Box”, but only two had actual faux phalluses inside. Drinks were drank, dancing was done and fun was had by all. To next year…
