Whoever’s in charge of booking the end of the Mayan calendar party in 2012 sure as hell better be in negotiations with Kan’Nal. When legendary mythology guru Joseph Campbell said artists were the new shamen, Kan’Nal listened. Currently based in the “People’s Republic of Boulder,” Kan’Nal is a seven-piece “shamanic rock” ensemble originally founded by songwriter/vocalist Tzol and guitarist Tierro on the shores of a magical lake called Atitlan in Guatemala. Not too shabby, as far as band mythologies go. They’ve come a long way since, commissioning cover art from LSD inventor Albert Hoffman’s friend Martina and touring multiple countries non-stop. What does “shamanic rock” sound like? Well, Rusted Root is the closest comparison I can make, but Kan’Nal is definitely darker and more primal than that, partly due to the addition of distorted electric guitars. The characters represented by Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto cast would definitely dig it. Burning Man, being the world music melting pot it is, is certainly a perfect venue. Awaken your sacred destiny and dance around the fire.
