4/20 HINDSIGHT

Manufactured Superstar's Circus Part Duh, Image Mag's In Bloom IV: Freshly Cut and orange peel's Unbirthday Bash collaborated Friday, 4/20 at The Church for an event of magnum proportions. The Church glittered with the strange and sexy, the naughty and freaky.  One might have even felt themselves to be in the midst of a circus on an acid trip….and rightfully so. The night began as unconventional characters emerged into the crowd, illustrating the theme of the evening: an eccentric circus. Meanwhile, femme fatale of BreaksFM.com/Supabreakz, DJ MLE, brewed up the energy with her signature dirty breaks. Her thumping bass and broken beats inspired the @$$ shaking of clubbers and surrounding spectacles. From drag queens and hula hooping gals to clowns and stilt walkers (mostly courtesy of Spektical Entertainment, Cyber Fetish Dolls, Kaivalya Hoop Dancers, Wicked I Productions and Vixens Entertainment), attendees were constantly gawking with piqued interest. The bizarre atmosphere didn't even repel the mainstream LoDo crowd. Instead, the slick-heeled fashionistas coexisted alongside the club kids to watch the evening's fashion event.

The fashion show received a proper musical introduction, thanks to Westword's "Best Club DJs of 2006," Friends in Stereo live. The house was packing in and people were dripping with anticipation. At 10:30 sharp, the models stomped down the runway in quirky yet modern
clothing from Belleview, Cool Waves and The Skye and hair by Blanc Salon. A choreographed dance performance by Sick Nasty broke up the monotony.  However, it was a tiger who stole the spotlight: a female performer "dressed" head to toe in tiger body paint, courtesy of Glitter Freckle. She crawled on her hands and knees taking on the persona of a tiger on the prowl.  Needless to say, she grabbed the audience's attention for the remainder of the show. The true party people quickly replaced the few who cleared out after the fashion extravaganza. F.I.S members, Satori-C and PJ Stroller, kept the dance floor hot with original tracks and a live set including vocals by orange peel moses. The whirlwind continued as circus characters and vivacious go-go dancers resurfaced among the crowd and on stage. Shortly before midnight, Beatport's Manufactured Superstars, featuring DJs B-Rad and Sabotage, threw down some classic tunes and major mash-ups. The main floor crowd ate it up like a 3 year old with a pack of Tootsie Rolls. M.S.S. spun club favorites for the remainder of the evening, both as stage headliner and musical backdrop for an aerial act, a contortionist, and jugglers. At this point, things got a bit blurry. I was surrounded by hazy eyes, dripping sweat, uncontrollable laughter, and swaying dancers. The night just continued to unravel into the best kind of mayhem: people celebrating the end of a responsible work week as they became part of the eccentric circus.
