CD Report Card: The Disco Biscuits

The quintessential jam band plays for hours on end, ignoring blistered fingers that pray for relief and parched throats that hope for just one drink. The Disco Biscuits just might be one such band.

On their newest live release, The Wind at Four to Fly, they take meandering and make it walk around the block a couple times. With some songs reaching pinnacles of 18 or 29 minutes, it is easy to get lost in the beats. Each song enraptures the senses and takes you on a magical journey through funky, electronic beats.

“Story of the World” weaves through whimsical mixes of whiny keyboards and lamenting guitars. During the brief moments of singing, Jon Gutwillig sounds rushed and energetic, but during the breakdowns there is an electronica, trance feel to the music. There is no need to hurry to the end of the song.

In common jam band fashion most of the songs on the album are improvisational because the Biscuits feel playing the same set every night would be wearisome. The Biscuits have been known to start one song but in the middle change to a totally different one. It is hard to know exactly what you’ll get. The beauty of The Wind at Four to Fly is that you get two hours of wacky, twisting tunes that capture the true essence of the band.

The shortest song in the set, “World is Spinning,” swells to moments of intensity and emotion and then becomes soulful and calm. Sam Altman’s frantic drums match perfectly with the pessimistic lyrics.

This two-disc set was recorded while Altman was still in the Biscuits, so its release was a bittersweet memory for the 11-year-old band. Allen Aucoin has since filled the vacant seat left by Altman, and the band has welcomed him with open arms and looks toward the future for more of their lively, melodious sets.

On tour now, the band sold out both the Boulder Theater and The Fillmore Auditorium. But fear not, for The Wind at Four to Fly will relieve the pain of missing their shows, just close your eyes and you’ll be there.
