Milk is absolutely delicious. Gus Van Sant’s (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho) biopic on the first ever openly gay politician, Milk is a must-see film (especially considering homophobic legislation is still a hot button issue two full decades later). Assassinated San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk is literally channeled by Sean Penn. Who knew Madonna’s ex-hubby had it in him? Penned by Dustin Lance Black, Milk finds Milk as he picks up a stranger in the New York subway on the eve of his fortieth birthday. The duo soon heads west to settle in the city by the bay, eventually opening a camera shop on Castro Street. Following an implied threat by a neighboring business owner, Milk springs into community organizer mode (drawing yet another wildly relevant parallel to the here and now). Boycotting homophobic businesses—even putting some out of business—is the first bullet on his to-do list. Milk’s first little whiff of power is intoxicating. Politics becomes the next logical step, though it takes three campaign runs to finally win an election (dog sh!+ plays a memorable role). Anita Bryant, Disney songbird and Florida Citrus Commission spokeswoman, quickly emerges as a primary villain when she spearheads anti-gay rights legislation (via archival footage) in multiple states. Possibly closeted fellow Supervisor and eventual assassin (brought to life by W’s Josh Brolin) can’t handle living in Milk’s ever-growing shadow, though. The Green-Eyed Monster begins to rear its ugly head. A gay rights victory in California comes at the ultimate price. In Milk’s own words: “If a bullet should enter my brain, let it destroy every single closet door.” Now Playing @ The Mayan
