Charles Thompson has had a rough time living up to his legendary back catalogue.  The Pixies, which he fronted under stage name number one Black Francis, have been nearly universally lauded by everyone from David Bowie to Kurt Cobain, but his solo career since (mostly under the compromising Frank Black guise) has been somewhat uneven.  That’s not to say that there haven’t been a few gems over the last decade and a half, many of which have aged remarkably well, but none have exactly stirred the rock world’s imagination like timeless Pixies cuts.  Recently reverting back to his original Pixies alias seems to have been a fine career move, though.  Just ask comedy kingpin Judd Apatow, who licensed “You Can’t Break a Heart and Have It” for the surfing scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  Svn Fngrs, his latest courtesy of Cooking Vinyl, includes some of the most compelling songwriting of his entire tenure.  Not only that, but the vocal production has been noticeably ramped up as well.

Black is back.
