wordplay by orange peel moses image by Jill Buchanan Jes Brieden’s “kitten motor” is almost always purring. In other words, she is a perpetual hummer. Unless she’s spooning the Sandman, her diaphragm is in constant action, gently forcing wind through the delicate folds of her vocal chords and producing audible sound. If you were a fly on the wall, you could hear her in her car, in her soundproof isolation booth, and even in the shower (and given the number of eyes flies have...you get the picture). She can’t really help it; she’s practically compelled to do so by an authority higher than her puny mortal self. Like the Energizer Bunny, she just keeps going, and going, and going... “When you’ve got the bug to sing, you’ve got the bug! It feels very natural to sing and it feels very good. I feel more normal with a mic in my hand than I do talking, and there are so many things I want to sing to so many people. Sometimes, I don’t know where it comes from, but to reach people in this way is very important to me.” Connecting with eardrums hasn’t been much of an issue thus far in Jes’s melody-belting career. Caliber of collaborators has certainly contributed immensely to her trajectory. Ever since bumping into her “Starchildren” writing partner Mike Olsen (the fruits of which were eventually licensed to Paul van Dyk) at a studio during Prince’s big payoff year, A-list co-authors including D:Fuse, Deepsky, Tiesto and Gabriel & Dresden have been practically banging down her door in droves. Releases with that kind of talent involved tend to get heard. Consider this: before she’d realized approximately how popular her stratosphere-worthy Motorcycle single “As the Rush Comes” had become, 10,000 fans in Birmingham, England surprised her by singing along at the top of their lungs--both overwhelming and even overpowering her massively amplified self. The audiences have only grown exponentially since. Seven years of heavenly output later, Jes possesses some of the most in-demand pipes in all of dance music. After all, how many Rave on the Rocks or Global Dance head liners have been booked more than once, let alone two years running (besides Dieselboy)? “Red Rocks is such a spiritual place, whether it is lit up by the sun or when the sun is going down. It’s just gorgeous and, acoustically, sounds amazing.”
Amazing, at least last year, thanks in part to Jes’s appearance and performance, even if only for a couple of numbers. Brief as it was, though, she was utterly humbled and satiated with the highly coveted window of opportunity. Of course, time slot free reign the previous eve at the Church might’ve sedated anyone’s inclination to play the diva card on Mother Nature’s finest stage (no matter how diva prone one’s previous behavior). Jes is certainly no unappreciative queen, though. She’d never dream for a nanosecond of taking her fans or demands for granted. In fact, nearly a year later, she’s still got a certain second stage headliner’s disc in her car changer.
“My favorite Friends in Stereo song is ‘I Like Your Tits.’ I’m lucky enough that we will all be together again.” July 22nd @ Red Rocks
