Board Couture: Hard Core Action

Picture this. Girl walks into skate shop. Guy behind counter looks girl up and down, noting the skirt and heels (not stilettos, I’m assured). “Ummm…You Skate?” inquires guy, most surprised by girl in heels and skirt. Girl nods and is subsequently put through something resembling The Inquisition. Why? Because only man rides (beats chest with pride and grunts). Girls in heels and skirts watch and bandage scrapes on boys when boys fall off boards because they try to show off for girls in heels and skirts. If girl does mount board then she look more like boy than girl and drink more at keg parties to show she man with non-man parts. Not the girls behind Core Action Sports and the girls flocking to get the goods their web store brings together.

The girls of Core Action Sports, sisters Courtney and Lisa, believe girls shouldn’t have to sacrifice looking like a girl to rip like a…well, like a girl. ‘Fashion and function,’ that’s their Alma Marta.

“Once there were two schools of women. Everyone had to fit into one of the two. There was no middle ground. A girl could either be into the fashion side of sports and get super cute gear, but it didn’t work for sh!+. Or, if a gal was more hardcore, she could get the awesome, super techy functional gear, but then she looked like the last time she set foot in a mall was the 1970s. Not to mention that this conundrum perpetuated the stereo-types of female action sports athletes.”

The girls swore to change this stalemate. So they started a website bringing together the best apparel and gear meeting the ‘fashion and function’ philosophy for skate, ski, snow, surf and wake. But stopping there would not sate these girls’ appetites, so they added to it an on-line forum for discussion and customer interaction where women could gather to learn more about action sports and fashion.

But where would fashion be without the fashion show? Core Action Sports feels the same way. That’s why on October 12th, the Mile High Station in Denver becomes the hub for all things sexy, sassy and action sports.

“The event is going to be amazing because there is nothing like it in Colorado. There is no event that combines fashion and action sports – especially not one dedicated to women! Not only will there be female skaters (Mimi Knoop and Cara-Beth Burnside may be in attendance), but there will also be a runway fashion show featuring the hot upcoming styles from winter lines – brands like Nikita, Roxy, Vans, Section, Orage, Von Zipper, Dragon, FEW and many others will be featured (both well known and niche brands). The first 200 attendees will get goodie bags with tons of great stuff, there will be delicious food, giveaways, break-dancers, a silent auction to benefit breast cancer awareness, and proceeds go to two action sports organizations: Action Sports Alliance and Adaptive Action Sports.”

The Core Action Sports fashion show will be preceded by a skate exhibition and Dressy Bessy will make an appearance to close out the show. The runway portion will include fifteen of Colorado’s freshest faces, featuring the makeup stylings of Katelyn Simkins and hair by Tuana Hair Design.
