Hindsight: Ukulele Loki’s Folderol Follies

The circus is omnipresent these days, including mainstream music videos by acts from Christina Aguilera to Panic at the Disco! It’s practically hotter than sex. Cirque du Soleil’s meteoric rise to prominence, practically rendering the Ringling Bros. obsolete, is probably at least partially responsible, but good old fashioned nostalgia might deserve some credit as well. As evidence, back in the day, one had to wait for the circus to come to town. Those days are long gone. These days, nearly every major American metropolis has got its own homegrown sideshow troupe. Certain cities in California even boast multiple collectives. Ukulele Loki’s Folderol Follies is probably Colorado’s most well-known thus far. This past “Phat” Tuesday, they headlined Boulder’s Fox Theatre for the first time (though many individual members have appeared there before with other ensembles, including Grammy-nominated Devotchka). Bandleader and deformed balloon animal maker Loki’s own Gadabout Orchestra, this particular incarnation featuring cello, drums, glockenspiel, melodica, trombone, trumpet, tuba and the stringed music maker of his namesake, serves as the house band for Follies, and the “body music” roster is fleshed out by a modest but uber-talented cast of Front Range-based performers including stilt walker/French maid Daniel “Alejandra,” fire-breathing midget Lil’ Miss Firefly, burlesque specialist Miss Orchid Mei, aerialists Oracle Dance (Adrienne, Alexandra and Monnya), comedienne/tap dancer Petunia and acrobalancers Darden and Joe. It looks even better in person than it does on paper, too. Assembling a team of that caliber requires years of investigation and vision. Loki certainly shoulders his share of the entertainment responsibility, though, which may help explain his fellow Follies’ commitment to the project. Clever transitional comedy (“Women’s panties have a tendency to fly towards the stage during this next act…the tuba solo,”) and original tunes about “Deformed Balloon Animals” (the craft he supposedly mastered in the midst of a breakup bender) and unusually fantastic facial follicle adventures. Best “Phat” Tuesday ever.
