When Ween titled their infamous potty-mouthed country album 12 Golden Country Greats, the moniker was meant to be slightly ironic.  However, although few outside the hipster circuit knows Ratatat, Classics is chock full of instant classics.  Flawlessly fusing uber-melodic, layered electric guitar parts with electronic synths and hip hop beats gives Ratatat extremely broad appeal.  The kicker?  The band has no vocalist.  Sure, there is the occasional sample, including some kind of growling wildcat (a jaguar maybe?), but the bulk of the tunes hold up firmly on their own without the presence of a human voice.  This feat is not to be underestimated.  While there are plenty of singers I could live without, the audio spectrum of the human voice is the most complex and interesting of any instrument around.  Music has to be overflowing with unforgettable hooks to survive without pipes.  In fact, there are only a handful of well-known examples, including some of Santana’s biggest hits, The Allman Brothers’ “Jessica” and Santo & Johnny’s classic “Sleepwalk.”  Ratatat can hang with that illustrious crowd, in my opinion.  Apparently, they opened for The Faint’s last Ogden gig, wowing nearly everyone in earshot.  If that isn’t testimonial enough, I give up
